Ghost Forests of Terrebonne

Many areas throughout Terrebonne parish are haunted with the skeletal remains of Bald Cypress and Live Oak trees. According to environmental experts including Denise Reed, Chief Scientist at The Water Institute of the Gulf, Cypress trees die when the water surrounding their root system becomes too salty and oak trees die when the land becomes too wet.  Additionally, many oak trees die due to a combination of the saltwater intrusion and subsidence.
